Spiritual and Religious Care
Living with a life-limiting illness affects not only the body but also the mind and spirit.
Patients may find they are suddenly full of questions such as, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ ‘What’s it all been about?’ Spirituality is concerned with a person’s inner life. It is how people find meaning and purpose, hope and solace in life. It affects our emotions and our longings: sadness and joy; loneliness and friendship; hopes and fears; doubts and beliefs.
At Willowbrook we recognise the importance of providing opportunities for both patients and their families/carers to talk and to explore any concerns.
The Chaplaincy team consists of a Lead Chaplain and a number of visiting priests, ministers and members of religious orders. They all work together to provide spiritual and religious care for patients and their families and carers.
You do not have to be religious or a churchgoer to see a chaplain. The team is happy to see anyone of any faith or no faith at all. Many people who are not religious find it helpful to have someone with whom they can discuss their anxieties, fears and hopes.
The Chaplaincy team regularly visits the Inpatient unit and Day Therapy. They are also available to see Outpatients on request. Staff can refer any patient, relative or carer to the team for support. Spiritual or religious leaders from the patient’s own community are very welcome to visit. The Chaplaincy team will make contact with a patient’s own spiritual and religious leader, if requested.
Willowbrook has a Chapel. It is a quiet, multi-faith space, open day and night for those who would like to reflect, pray, meditate or simply find some peace. Specific services can be arranged on request e.g. marriage, blessing of a relationship, baptism, confirmation. We try to respond to any requests and work with families to enable final wishes to be achieved. Weddings can be organised with very little notice by liaising with the Registrar in St Helens. We believe that its never too late to fulfil a dream.
