About Us

Willowbrook Hospice is an Independent Charity, which was set up in 1997 to build and run a Specialist Palliative Care Unit. The Hospice is governed by a Board of Trustees and run on a day to day basis by a Chief Executive and a management team.

The clinical team is led by a Medical Director who is responsible for delivering four main services, the In-patient, DayTherapy, Out Patient and Psychosocial services. Although approximately 95% of our patients have cancer we treat other life limiting diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, end stage heart failure, renal failure.

We have 10 in-patient beds, weekly out-patient clinics and are registered for up to 50 day therapy places a week. We care for approximately 1000 patients a year working in partnership with the local health care community. We liaise very closely with the Hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team, the community Specialist Palliative Care team and the local Primary care teams, which includes the local GPs and district nurses.

The Hospice also has an important remit in leading and delivering an integrated Palliative Care Education to all healthcare professionals in the locality to ensure that patients are cared for in the best possible way in whatever care setting they may be in. 

The Hospice is situated in Prescot to serve the surrounding local communties of St Helens and Knowsley. There are 89 full and part time staff and over 425 volunteers who work for Willowbrook Hospice. The hospice could not function without the valuable contribution of our volunteers.

It costs £2.825m a year to run the Hospice. We are part funded by the NHS who make a contribution of approximately a third towards our running costs, which means that we have to rely on generous donations from the public and our own fundraising efforts to raise the other two thirds.

We have a Fundraising office in St Helens and a separate Trading company which runs the Willowbrook Hospice Lottery and our seven Charity shops, two situated in St Helens, and others in Thattoheath, Earlstown, Rainford, Fingerpost and Prescot. We also have a large 7000 square feet donation warehouse and distribution centre in Lock Street, St Helens
